About the Event

The musical program:

  • From Sonata No. 3 in C Major for Violin Solo, BWV 1005 (1720) by Johann Sebastian Bach
  • Songs (1944) arranged for Horn and Piano If you Should Go, Song for the Lonely by William Grant Still
  • Romance, Opus 36 for French Horn and Piano (1874) by Camille Saint-Saëns
  • Sonata for Violin and Piano (1914) by Leoš Janáček
  • From Before Sleep and Dreams for Piano (1990) by Aaron Jay Kernis
  • Trio in E-flat Major for French Horn, Violin and Piano, Opus 40 (1865) by Johannes Brahms

Mr. Kelley will share a fun and illuminating talk at 3pm about the social and musical evolution of the horn from a simple valveless instrument used to communicate during the hunt, to the exquisite essential mainstay in great symphonic and operatic repertoire.  The path from, "We've got a boar on the run and are pursuing it West!" to Richard Strauss' pyrotechnical use of the horn in opera to evoke the throes of love and passion was a fast and wild ride!
